FN0287-Commercial/Recreational/Aboriginal - Tuna - All Areas - Final 2022-2023 Pacific Tuna IFMP and changes to commercial harvest requirements
The 2022-23 Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) for Pacific Tuna has been approved by DFO's Regional Director General. This IFMP will be in place on April 1, 2022. Thank you to those who provided input in the development of this document, including through the advisory board and public comment processes. The final version is available here: https://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/Library/41044253.pdf The IFMP outlines updates to the management of Pacific tuna fisheries conducted by Canadian harvesters and in Canadian waters. Four of these updates are highlighted briefly below. First, beginning in the 2022 season, harvest on the high seas will not be permitted by Canadian commercial vessels 12 m in length or greater unless that vessel has an IMO Number. Then International Maritime Organization (IMO) can be obtained at no cost by following these steps: (1) Register for an account here: https://imonumbers.lrfairplay.com/Account/Register, (2) log on at https://imonumbers.lrfairplay.com/Ships and select "Request a Number" to access the form, (3) fill-out the form providing your Transport Canada (D.O.T.) number in the field for "Official Number" and your DFO vessel registration number (VRN) in the field for "Fishing Number", and (4) submit the form via email to ship.imo@ihs.com or online using the indicated button. The second significant change is that Canadian commercial harvesters will need to submit "Start Fishing Trip" (hail-out) reports at the beginning of each fishing trip and "End Fishing Trip" (hail-in) reports at the end of each fishing trip. Harvesters must review their conditions of licence for specific details on submitting these reports. Third, "change of zone" hails will no longer be required. Finally, as a condition of USA68 licences, Canadian harvesters authorized to fish in USA waters must contact the Tuna Resource Manager no later than September 16, 2022 to confirm that they have ceased fishing in USA waters. The Tuna Resource Manager is Brad Langman (bradley.langman@dfo-mpo.gc.ca).
