Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Area 14 

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River, October 16 - 400 Chum - Target Escapement 60,000.  
Big Qualicum River, October 11 - 9 Chum - Target Escapement 85,000.
Little Qualicum River, October 16 - 900 Chum - Target Escapement 85,000. 
Rosewall Creek - 33 Chum - October 13

At this time no full fleet commercial fishing opportunities are anticipated in 
the upcoming week as the observed escapement needs to be at least 65% of the 
target before fisheries will be considered.  For information regarding the Area 
14 Demonstration Fishery See Fishery Notice FN1070.

Areas 15 and 16 

Escapement estimates from intermittent assessments in Area 15 and 16 this 
season are as follows:

Sliammon Creek - 535 Chum - October 16
Lang Creek - 200 Chum - October 16
Theodosia River - 836 Chum - October 15
Okeover River - 0 Chum - October 16
Sooke River - 4000 Chum - October 9
Englishman River - 33 Chum - October 10
Sechelt Creek - 1 Chum - October 6
Mysers Creek - 6 Chum - September 30
Anderson Creek - 16 Chum - October 3

Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2019 due to low pre-season 
forecast levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River, October 16 - 4,500 - Target Escapement 40,000. 
Cowichan River, October 15 - 6 - Target Escapement 160,000.
Goldstream River, October 16 - 42 - Target Escapement 15,000.

It is still early in the Chum run timing in the South East Vancouver Island 
Area. Didson counters were installed in the Nanaimo River on October 2 and in 
the Cowichan River on October 11. Stream surveys of the Goldstream River began 
October 14. 

There will not be a commercial fishery in Areas 17, 18 and 19 this week. 

The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday, October 24.
