FN0539-Chinook and Chum Salmon - Notice of Webinar June 20, 2017 on Management Measures on Prey Availability Related to Killer Whale Recovery
DFO would like to invite you to participate in a webinar from 10:30-12:00 PST on June 20, 2017 regarding management measures on prey availability resulting from the Review of the Effectiveness of Recovery Measures for Southern Resident Killer Whale. If you are interested in participating in this session, please respond by email at: sara.xpac@dfo-mpo.gc.ca by June 18, 2017. You may also register for this webinar at the following link: https://gts-ee.webex.com/gts-ee/j.php?RGID=rcbb30d0de71a0f70a94cfbc0ecbf8e66. Background: In November 2016, the Government of Canada announced the Oceans Protection Plan (OPP), which includes a commitment to address the threats to three marine mammal populations: Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW), St. Lawrence Estuary Beluga, and North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW). The science based review builds on the recovery measures identified in the Species at Risk Act (SARA) (2002) recovery planning and reporting processes completed to date for these whales and presents an opportunity for the federal government and its partners to enhance recovery efforts. In Pacific Region, DFO will be undertaking targeted regional meetings for Acoustic and Physical Disturbance, Prey Availability, and Contaminants, which were identified in the Recovery Strategy for the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) in Canada as key threats to the Southern Resident Killer Whale (available at http://dfo-mpo.gc.ca/species-especes/whalereview-revuebaleine/index-eng.html). Feedback received from these sessions will be compiled into a Ministerial report recommending an approach for implementation of enhanced recovery efforts for these whales. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Contact Jonathan Fershau at sara.xpac@dfo-mpo.gc.ca or 604-666-2344.
