British Columbia's Family Fishing Weekend is a celebration of the great tradition of sport fishing. On June 16, 17 and 18, 2017, the public can go fishing at no cost in many of BC's lakes and rivers. The Government of Canada is also providing an opportunity to fish at no cost (these dates only) in all tidal waters; for these dates a Tidal Water Sports Fishing licence is not required to fish in BC tidal waters except for species and area restrictions as specified below. This is applicable to both adults and juveniles (children aged 15 and under), as well as to Canadian residents and non-residents. HALIBUT AND LINGCOD REQUIREMENTS -------------------------------- If you are planning to retain halibut in any tidal waters, and/ or lingcod in Areas 12 to 19 (excluding Subarea 12-14), and Subareas 20-5 to 20-7 and 29-5: - You must obtain a complimentary Tidal Water Sport Fishing licence online: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/sportfish - Check daily, possession and size limits and closures online: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/index-eng.html - All tidal area closures and recreational fishing limits and restrictions still apply. - Immediately record your catch in ink on your licence. OTHER SPECIES ------------- If you wish to fish for other species and in Areas not specified above: - You do not require a licence to fish tidal waters during the Family Fishing Weekend. - Check daily, possession and size limits and area closures online: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/index-eng.html - All tidal area closures and recreational fishing limits and restrictions still apply. JUVENILE LICENCES ----------------- Juvenile licences for children aged 15 and under are free all year round, and may be obtained as described below. ALREADY HAVE A LICENCE? ----------------------- If you already have a valid Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence, you must carry your licence with you and record your catch in ink on your licence for the species specified in your licence conditions (halibut, lingcod, chinook salmon). OBTAINING A LICENCE ------------------- If you wish to retain lingcod in the areas specified above, or halibut or salmon in any tidal waters during the Family Fishing Weekend, plan ahead! Licences are available online from June 12 2017 and can be obtained via any computer connected to the internet at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/sportfish (or by using web search key words "Recfish Licence"). Once you register, you will also be able to replace a lost licence or renew future licences through the National Recreational Licensing System (NRLS). Licences can also be obtained at select public access points from June 12 2017; a list of current service locations may be found at http://www.pac.dfo- mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/IAP-FAI-eng.html. It is recommended that you contact the applicable Independent Access Provider to confirm the availability of licences and business hours prior to departure. To minimize system delays, the best time to access NRLS is outside of peak periods. Peak periods are every day from 12-3pm; every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; and anytime there is a major fishery opening, such as the Fraser Sockeye opening. If you encounter problems with printing, you can log into your account at a later time and reprint your licence using the "licence replacement" function. Refunds will not be issued for licences purchased online, so please ensure your licence selection (including the effective date) is correct before you complete your transaction.
