FN1248-Commercial - Salmon: Gill Net - Chum - Area E - Mid Vancouver Island - Area 17 - Opening October 21, 2016 - Previous Opening
Due to a previous DFO system outage, which occurred from October 17-19, 2016, this fishery notice is being posted for your information and for archive purposes. An Area E gill net fishery targeting Nanaimo River chum in Area 17 is scheduled for October 21, 2016 as described below. Gill nets will open for 12 hours from 07:00 to 19:00 hours on Friday October 21, 2016, in a portion of the following areas: Those portions of Subareas 17-12 and 17-18 southeasterly of the parallel passing through 49°15.0' north latitude at Icarus Point. That portion of Subarea 17-13 easterly of a line from 49°12.785' north latitude and 123°56.421' west longitude at Horswell Bluff on Vancouver Island to 49°11.917' north latitude and 123°55.500' west longitude at Mckay Point on Newcastle Island then to 49°11.008' north latitude and 123°54.997' west longitude at Batchelor Point on Protection Island, to 49°10.596' north latitude and 123°52.193' west longitude at Descanso Bay light on Gabriola Island. The minimum mesh size is 149 mm (5 and 7/8 in). The maximum net depth is 90 meshes. The maximum hang ratio 3:1. Corkline to web distance minimum 0 cm maximum 2 m. The target species in this fishery is chum salmon, the incidental catch of pink salmon may be retained in the areas open to fishing. There will be non- retention of sockeye, coho, chinook, and steelhead. Variation Order No. 2016-SAL-17-GN-03 New for 2016 Please note that all salmon gill net fisheries have requirements for recording and reporting. See FN0579 and FN0580 outlining these changes for Area E fishers. Refer to your 2016/2017 Area E conditions of licence for complete changes. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC waters. By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, and where these turtles are using our waters. If you see a sea turtle, please call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663). Please include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the location, and time of sighting. Fishers are requested to avoid fishing among birds and not to run the line if birds are near the net. Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which are entangled and to release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the water. Please check all birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg. If a bird is banded please contact Laurie Wilson with the band number and capture date and location at 1 866-431-2473 (BIRD) or by the email below. Handle birds with gloves, double bag dead birds and label each bird with date, time, and location and store them on ice. Please call your local patrol vessel to organize pick-up or drop them off at a local DFO office. Alternatively, please send photographs of birds with a reference object such as a coin, and the date, time and location to laurie.wilson@ec.gc.ca.
