FN1022-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Chum - Area 25 - Limited Effort Opening - September 27 & 28, 2016.
This fishery is a limited entry and limited effort fishery. This opening will be closed on short notice if more than 4 vessels participate in the fishery. The following 4 vessels were selected by the Area D Harvest Committee through a random draw (see FN1013) to participate in this opening: 1. ODESSA V K VRN: 25477 2. STAR QUEEN VRN: 30689 3. CAPITAL GAIN VRN: 29474 4. TINY BUBBLES VRN: 28521 Some vessels selected in the draw elected not to participate. Gill nets open daily for 10.5 hours from 08:00 hours to 18:30 hours Tuesday, September 27 and Wednesday September 28, 2016 in the following areas: A portion of Subarea 25-6 southerly of a line commencing from point on the shore of Nootka Island located at 49 degrees 39.066 minutes North 126 degrees 37.384 minutes West to 49 degrees 39.688 minutes North 126 degrees 36.796 minutes West at or near the navigation light at Boston Point then to the southern tip of the largest Villaverde Island (49 degrees 39.729 minutes North 126 degrees 34.892 minutes West) then to the western shore of Bligh Island (49 degrees 39.011 minutes North 126 degrees 33.182 minutes West). Subarea 25-7. The target species is chum. Chinook, coho, sockeye, pink and steelhead may not be retained. Maximum gill net length is 375 m. Minimum mesh-size is 149 mm (5-7/8 inches). Maximum depth is 60 meshes. Maximum hang ratio is 3:1, cork-line to web distance minimum is 0 cm, maximum is 2 m. Variation Order Numbers: 2016-Sal-25-GN-10 and 2016-Sal-25-GN-11. This fishery is designed to provide in-season assessment information on the Nootka Sound chum return. Vessel masters please note that future fishing opportunities will depend on timely catch reporting, as per the conditions of licence. New for 2016: Please note that there are new requirements for recording and reporting for Area D gill net fishers. See FN0492 and FN0493 that highlight some of these new requirements. Refer to your 2016/2017 conditions of licence for complete details. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC waters. By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when, and where these turtles are using our waters. If you see a sea turtle, please call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663). Please include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (i.e. leatherback), the location, and time of sighting. Fishers are requested to avoid fishing among birds and not to run the line if birds are near the net. Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which are entangled and to release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the water. Please check all birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg. If a bird is banded please contact Laurie Wilson with the band number and capture date and location at 1 866-431-2473 (BIRD) or by the email below. Handle birds with gloves, double bag dead birds and label each bird with date, time, and location and store them on ice. Please call your local patrol vessel to organize pick-up or drop them off at a local DFO office. Alternatively, please send photographs of birds with a reference object such as a coin, and the date, time and location to laurie.wilson@ec.gc.ca.
