FN0989-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Troll - Area F Troll Fishery Update - Sept 13, 2016
AREA F TROLL UPDATE - SEPT. 13, 2016 CHINOOK The chinook ITQ fishery reopened on August 25 (FN0861) with the same fishing areas as the previous fishery. The boundaries were adjusted to include the west coast of Haida Gwaii on September 10 (FN0953) and the removal of the Graham Island ribbon boundary on September 15 (FN0981). The estimated catch of chinook since the reopening on August 25 is 17,000 chinook with a validated catch of 14,697 pieces to date. Approximately 60 vessels participated in the opening with an average CPUE of 25 chinook per day in the first week. Effort had declined to 30 vessels and CPUE has declined to 10 chinook per day over the past week. The 2016 season catch to date is estimated to be 142,250 Chinook, which is 68% of the 207,000 piece commercial troll TAC. COHO The targeted coho fishery opened July 10th (FN0597). Average coho CPUE over the past week has declined to 16 coho per vessel per day. Coho CPUE has declined over the past 2 weeks as the majority of the fleet is moved to target chinook. Total estimated catch to date is 204,500 coho, 37,500 pink and 600 sockeye. Fleet effort has declined to approximately 40 vessels over the past week. Area 3 Coho Indicators of Nass River Coho abundance have been strong to date resulting in the opening of Area 3 to troll (FN0831). Total catch of coho by troll in Area 3 is 6400 coho. Approximately 5 vessels have participated over the past week with an average CPUE of 25 coho per vessel per day. Central Coast Limited Entry Coho Demo Fishery The demo fishery closed Aug. 31st with a total of 7 vessels participating in Area 6 and 3 vessels in Area 7 and Area 8 over the month. Reports indicate modest coho CPUE's of approximately 30-50 coho per day. Total estimated catch by this demo is currently 2750 coho and 900 pink from Area 6 and 1500 coho and 50 pink from Areas 7 and 8. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Peter Katinic Area F Troll Manager 250-559-8330
