FN0977-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net - Chinook and Chum - Area 25 - Information Update
The catch in the last Area 25 gill net was zero chinook with 3 vessels participating. There will be no further chinook targeted gill net fisheries in Area 25 this year. The following was previously announced in FN0949 and is provided here again as a reminder: The pre-season forecast for Nootka chum is 55,000 (25,000-84,000) and the target fishery reference point is 53,000. As per discussions at the Area 25 Roundtable, a limited effort gill net fishery is being planned for 2 days a week starting September 27th. The total number of vessels participating has yet to be determined pending Area 25 Roundtable discussions but will likely be from 3 to 5 vessels. These fisheries are designed to limit the harvest rate to a maximum of 20% and intended to provide in-season data that can be used to assess abundance. Area D licence holders wishing to participate in the limited effort Nootka chum fishery should contact Barry Crow, Area D Harvest Committee member for details and to apply to participate. Applications must state clearly the vessel name, CFV, vessel operator's name, and vessel operator's telephone number. Applications to participate may be hand delivered, text-messaged, e-mailed, or mailed to the Area D contacts listed below. E-mail or text is preferred and can be confirmed quickly.
