FN0594-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Region 1: Closure to Salmon Fishing in Management Units 1-1 to 1-6
Throughout the winter and spring of 2016 Vancouver Island experienced exceptionally low precipitation levels and warm temperatures, and as a result experienced rapid deterioration of a near-normal snowpack. Water levels in many systems on southern Vancouver Island are now lower than normal and forecast to continue to drop over the approaching summer season. These low flow levels coupled with warm water temperatures will create challenging migratory conditions for salmon throughout much of the southern portion of Region 1 and will likely result in increased mortality of migratory salmon in these southern Region 1 systems. Effective July 1, 2016 until September 1, 2016 the following Vancouver Island Rivers are closed to angling: All rivers and streams in management units 1-1 to 1-6 excluding the following: Big Qualicum River, Puntledge River, and the Quinsam/Campbell Rivers. For clarity, in freshwater management units 1-1 to 1-6 only the Big Qualicum, Puntledge and Quinsam/Campbell Rivers remain open to angling. Variation Order No. 2016-155 Notes: Did you witness suspicious fishing activity or a violation? If so, please call the Fisheries and Ocean Canada 24-hour toll free Observe, Record, Report line at (800) 465-4336 or the British Columbia's toll-free RAPP line (Report All Poachers and Polluters) at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
