Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Area 14 

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River - 37,000 chum (Nov 25) - Target Escapement 60,000  
Big Qualicum River - 63,000 chum (Nov 24) - Target Escapement 85,000
Little Qualicum River - 71,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 85,000 

Movement of fish into Area 14 systems has slowed and total escapement to all 
three systems has not changed significantly from last week.  Monitoring will 
continue but no further commercial fishing opportunities are expected for the 
season.

Areas 15 and 16 

No assessment information.
 
Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast 
levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River - 59,000 chum (Nov 9) - Target Escapement 40,000 
Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000
Cowichan River - 117,000 (Nov 25) - Target Escapement 160,000
Goldstream River - 16,000 (Nov 10) - Target Escapement 15,000
Escapement to Cowichan River will continue to be monitored through next week 
and if the target escapement is achieved the Area B and E Harvest Committees 
will be contacted. 

Today (Thursday, November 26) was the last MVI Chum Working Group conference 
call of the season. There will be no further MVI Chum Bulletins for 2015.
