Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Area 14 

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River - 6,450 chum (Oct 21) - Target Escapement 60,000  
Big Qualicum River - 3,350 chum (Oct 20) - Target Escapement 85,000
Little Qualicum River - 6,500 chum (Oct 14) - Target Escapement 85,000 


An assessment of the Little Qualicum is being conducted today and escapement 
will be provided in the escapement summary bulletin tomorrow.  At this time no 
commercial fishing opportunities are anticipated in the upcoming week.  

Areas 15 and 16 

No assessment information.
 
Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2014 due to low forecast 
levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River - 14,000 chum (Oct 16) - Target Escapement 40,000 
Chemainus River - unknown - Target Escapement 50,000
Cowichan River - 25,000 (Oct 20) - Target Escapement 160,000
Goldstream River - 835 (Oct 21) - Target Escapement 15,000

It is still early in the chum run timing. A Didson counter has been installed 
on the Nanaimo and Cowichan River systems. An update on the Nanaimo escapement 
will be provided early next week and Advisors will be contacted if fishery 
plans need to be discussed. At this time no commercial fisheries are 
anticipated for Area 17, 18 or 19 at this time.

The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday, October 29.
