Fishery Notice

Gill Nets open for 41 hours from 16:00 hours Sunday, October 25, 2015 to 09:00 
hours Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in the following portions of Areas 12 and 13:

AREA 12
In Subareas 12-1, a portion of 12-2 (closed south or inside of a line from a 
boundary sign at 50 degrees 28.570 minutes north by 126 degrees 18.117 minutes 
west to a boundary sign at 50 degrees 28.393 minutes north by 126 degrees 
15.279 minutes west (Adam River boundary)), a portion of 12-3 (closed south or 
inside a line from a boundary sign at 50 degrees 29.137 minutes north by 126 
degrees 34.245 minutes west to a boundary sign at 50 degrees 29.255 minutes 
north by 126 degrees 36.680 minutes west (Tsitika River boundary)), 12-4 to 12-
6, 12-8 to 12-12, a portion of 12-18 (easterly of a line running from Lewis 
Point on Vancouver Island to Donegal Head on Malcolm Island), 12-20, 12-21 and 
12-24. 

AREA 13
In Subareas 13-6, 13-7 (excluding Deepwater Bay, closed southeast or inside of 
a line from the boundary sign at 50 degrees 11.434 minutes north by 125 degrees 
20.268 minutes west to the boundary sign at 50 degrees 10.861 minutes north by 
125 degrees 20.885 minutes west), 13-8 to 13-10, a portion of 13-11 lying west 
of a line from Bodega Point on Quadra Island to a boundary sign on Quadra 
Island at 50 degrees 16.390 minutes north by 125 degrees 22.620 minutes west, 
13-27 to 13-29, 13-30 (excluding the Amor de Cosmos Creek mouth boundary, 
closed in those water surrounding the mouth of Amor de Cosmos Creek inside the 
radius of a circle 337 meters in diameter intersecting the shoreline at 50 
degrees 21.862 minutes north by 125 degrees 41.164 minutes west [east of the 
creek mouth] and 50 degrees 21.658 minutes north by 125 degrees 41.630 minutes 
west [west of the creek mouth]), 13-31, 13-32, 13-35, and a portion of 13-40 
lying west of a line running from the boundary sign on West Thurlow Island 
(approximately 1.5 miles east of Eden Point) to the boundary sign on the 
opposite shoreline on Hardwicke Island. 

The target species in this fishery is chum salmon.  Pink salmon retention is 
also permitted but there is non-retention of chinook, coho, sockeye and 
steelhead (none of these species may be onboard a vessel that is engaged in 
fishing unless they are being revived in the revival tank immediately prior to 
release).

Minimum mesh size 149 mm (5 7/8 inches).  Maximum depth 90 meshes.  Maximum 
hang ratio 3:1, corkline to web distance minimum 0 cm and maximum 2 m.  Maximum 
net length is 375 meters.  In Subareas 12-9 to 12-12 gill net soak times are a 
maximum of 45 minutes.  In all other open areas, the maximum gill net soak time 
is 60 minutes.

Please note that all salmon gill net fisheries have new requirements for 
recording and reporting catch.  See FN0482 and FN0579 outlining these changes 
for Area D Gill Net fishers.  Refer to your Conditions of 2015-16 Salmon Area D 
licence for complete details.

Fishers are reminded that Catch Reports are due not later than 6 hours 
following the completion of a fishery opening.  End Fishing Reports are due 
within 24 hours following the end of a fishing trip.  Fisher that fail to 
fulfil their Fishing Reporting requirements by the set time requirements are in 
non-compliance and can expect to be charged with a violation. 

No further gill net opportunities are anticipated in Areas 12 and 13 for the 
remainder of the season. 

Notice to all Area D Gill Net fishers:

Fishers must be aware of the requirements set forth in the Conditions of 2015-
16 Salmon Area D licence.  It is the responsibility of the licence holder and 
vessel master to review their current conditions of licence and to be aware of 
all the requirements that are set forth.  This includes both the mandatory use 
of operational revival boxes and the reporting of catch. 

Mooring in Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve will only be 
permitted 24 hours prior to a legal opening. The West and East boundaries are 
identified by a 4x8 foot white sign with 3x3 foot orange sign in the centre. 
The location of the west boundary is 50 degrees 29.759 minutes north by 126 
degrees 37.592 minutes west and the location of the East boundary is 50 degrees 
29.107 minutes north by 126 degrees 30.365 minutes west. 

Fishers are reminded it is an offence under Section 7 of the Marine Mammals 
Regulations to disturb marine mammals.  Fishers are advised to follow the Be 
Whale Wise: Marine Wildlife Guidelines for Boaters, Paddlers and Viewers (BWW) 
which are available from local Fisheries Offices or on-line at 
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/species-especes/mammals-mammiferes/view-
observer-eng.htm to avoid disturbing local killer whales and other marine 
mammals.

Fishers are requested to retain all dead birds which are entangled and to 
release live and unharmed birds by placing them in the water. Please check all 
birds for metal bird bands (rings) on the leg.  If a bird is banded please 
contact Laurie Wilson with the band number and capture date and location at 1-
866-431-2473 or by the email below.  Handle birds with gloves, double bag dead 
birds and label each bird with date, time, and location and store them on ice.  
Please call your local charter patrol to organize pick-up or drop them off at a 
local DFO office.  Alternatively, please send photographs of birds with a 
reference object such as a coin, and the date, time and location to 
laurie.wilson@ec.gc.ca. Your names and vessel names do not need to be 
identified or included.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is interested in reports of sea turtles in BC 
waters.  By documenting sightings we are able to learn more about how, when and 
where these turtles are using our waters. If you see or entangle a sea turtle, 
please call this toll-free phone number: 1-866-I SAW ONE (1-866-472-9663). 
Please include information such as the type of sea turtle seen (e.g. 
leatherback), the location, time of sighting and if entanglement has occurred.
