FN0722-RECREATIONAL - All species - Catch Monitoring and Reporting Improvement for 2014/ 2015
Catch and effort information is important to ensure fisheries resources are managed in a sustainable manner. It also provides valuable information for maintaining fishing access and opportunities. The Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence outlines the catch records that must be kept for chinook and halibut caught in any Area and, lingcod caught in the Strait of Georgia Areas 12 to 19 (excluding Subarea 12-14), Subareas 20-5 to 20- 7 and 29-5. In addition, the licence holder shall provide accurate information regarding their catch and fishing activities upon request of a Creel Surveyor or an online surveyor, authorities designated under s. 61(5) of the Fisheries Act. DFO and the Sport Fishing Advisory Board (SFAB) continue to work on improving recreational catch monitoring and reporting programs. These programs and the types of collection tools to be used are based on a pre- season fishery risk assessment which examines fishing effort and fishery priorities by time, area and species. The collection tools include: Dockside monitoring, creel surveys, internet surveys (iREC), logbooks, buoy counts and trailer counts. The Internet Recreational Effort and Catch Survey (iREC) program is a selection of recreational licence holders that are contacted via email and asked to provide information about their recreational fishing activity over a specified period. This information is provided using an internet survey accessed using an individual survey link emailed to the licence holder. It is important to report if you did not fish or did not catch any fish as this ensures that the study is representative of the fishery and its participants. For more information about iREC, please see the DFO website: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/irec/index-eng.html FOR MORE INFORMATION: Please contact: Brad Beaith (250)756-7190, Angela Mahboubi (250) 627-3409 and Devona Adams (604)666-3271.
