FN1177-COMMERCIAL - Herring - Amended 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan
The 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) has been amended. After further consultation, DFO has adjusted the distribution of the 13,066 short tons available to the commercial roe herring fisheries in the Strait of Georgia (Gulf) for 2012/2013. The roe herring gillnet quota is 6,350 short tons and the roe herring seine quota is 6,715 short tons. This results in individual quota amounts of 6.033 short tons for gillnets and 29.821 short tons for seines (based on an ideal coast wide distribution of licences). The food and bait fishery quota for the Strait of Georgia remains at 4,385 short tons. An option to shift quota from the roe seine fishery to the Strait of Georgia (Gulf) food and bait fishery for the 2012/2013 season has been provided. There will be a limit to the amount of quota that can be shifted out of the roe seine fishery resulting in a maximum quota of 6,000 short tons for the food and bait fishery, which means that a maximum of 1,615 tons may be shifted into the food and bait fishery. All quota shares shifted to the food and bait fishery will be deducted from the Strait of Georgia (Gulf) roe herring seine fishery target quota. This will be a voluntary one year selection to be made on the roe herring seine application form. The final number of licences, including those that have opted to harvest in the food and bait fishery, ideal distribution and quotas by gear type will be provided by way of Fishery Notice after the licence area selection deadline. An opportunity will be provided for reselection if an area or fishery is over subscribed. If more than 54 licences select the food and bait fishery after reselection, the maximum available quota of 1,615 short tons will be equally distributed amongst the licences that have selected that fishery. The commercial fishing plans in the IFMP for the roe herring fishery (Appendix 7) and the food and bait fishery (Appendix 9) have been amended to reflect these changes. Please reference the amended 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan for full details. If you have specific questions about these fisheries, please contact the lead roe herring and food and bait herring manager, Brenda Spence at 250-756-7329 or brenda.spence@dfo-mpo.gc.ca. You may request an electronic copy of the amended IFMP from Roger Kanno (roger.kanno@dfo-mpo.gc.ca), or retain a hard copy from any Pacific Fishery Licence Unit.
