FN1109-COMMERCIAL - Herring - Approval 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan
The 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) has been approved by the Regional Director General, Pacific. There has been an adjustment in the Total Allowable Catch Levels and expected use for the Pacific herring fisheries in the Strait of Georgia (SOG) that is reflected in the 2012/2013 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan. These levels are amended from the information in the Draft IFMP and advice received from the pre-season harvest planning consultations. The change is necessary due to misinterpretation of part of the recruitment forecast methodology applied in the initial stock assessment advice, resulting in a revision in the forecasted biomass and corresponding harvest option for the SOG stock assessment area. The maximum total allowable catch levels for the roe herring fisheries (seine and gillnet) and the food and bait fishery have been adjusted downward 2,449 tons in the SOG to reflect the maximum 20% harvest level, for a total available harvest of 18,288 tons as per the harvest rules. The revised quota amounts have been distributed proportionately between the roe and food and bait fisheries, the other harvest plans are unaffected. Consultations with the Herring Industry Advisory Board will take place in mid-November regarding the fishery quota adjustments. Should alternative solutions for these adjustments be developed, the appendices for the commercial fishing plans for the roe herring fishery and the food and bait fishery will be amended accordingly. You may request an electronic copy of the IFMP from Roger Kanno (roger.kanno@dfo-mpo.gc.ca), or retain a hard copy from any Pacific Fishery Licence Unit.
