Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday November 15, 2012 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 52,250 chum - target escapement 60,000. Little Qualicum River - 64,950 chum, - target escapement 130,000. Big Qualicum River - 80,600 chum - target escapement 100,000. Based on current escapement information in Area 14 there are no commercial fisheries anticipated at this time. There will be no further chum assessments on the Puntledge River this season. Area 15 and 16 Lang Creek: 18,000 chum. Sliammon Creek : 14,000 chum. There will be no further Chum assessments in Area 15 systems this season. Jervis Inlet systems: Skwawka River: 19,245 live chum, 1021 dead chums. Deserted Bay River: 12,295 live chums, 6720 dead chums. Tzoonie River: 37420 live chums, 6720 dead chums. Brittian River: 985 live chums, 25 dead chums. The chum assessment program in Area 16 systems will be completed this week. Area 17, 18, and 19 Nanaimo River: The last stream survey flight was on Nov 9th. Viewing conditions were good and the estimates were approximately 2,000 live and 4,000 dead. There are no signs of any abundance of fish in approach areas. The Nanaimo River escapement target is 60,000. Chemainus River: Last escapement estimate on Nov 14th was 4,000 chum. Peak count live plus dead was 7,000. There are no signs of any abundance of fish in approach areas. The Chemainus River escapement target is 50,000 Cowichan River: Current escapement based on a cumulative count past the Didson Counter is 235,000 chum. Over the last week an average of approximately 2,000 chums have been estimated per day past the counter. Commercial gillnet fisheries closed the evening of November 13 and the commercial seine fishery will close tonight. Test fish catch in Cowichan Bay and approach areas were less then 100 this past week. The Cowichan River escapement target is 160,000 Goldstream River: The last stream survey counts on November 14th estimated approximately 14,000 live and 13,000 dead in the system. Water conditions were good for stream survey work. Test fish catch in Satellite Channel through to Misery Bay in Saanich Inlet were less then 20 this past week. The Goldstream River escapement target is 15,000. Assessment will continue in-river and in approach areas. This will be the final Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update for the 2012 season.
