WEST COAST VANCOUVER ISLAND: AREA 23, 24 & 25

No commercial herring roe fisheries or spawn-on-kelp fisheries are planned for 
the west coast of Vancouver Island. Notices will be published weekly until the 
end of the spawning season. 

AREA 23 - BARKLEY SOUND

There was a spawn reported in Barkley Sound on Monday, March 26, at Salmon 
Beach. Ucluelet First Nation contracted assessment vessel is assessing it 
today. The herring test and assessment vessel Pachena No. 1 conducted a test 
fishery east of the Food Islets on March 24 which yielded 11.83% Sounding was 
carried out in Barkley Sound over the next two days with two main bodies of 
fish located in the Forbes Island to Chrow Island area and in the upper part of 
Pipestem Inlet. Small schools were found elsewhere through Macoah passage. The 
Pachena No. 1 left the area on March 26 for Clayoquot Sound.

AREA 24 - CLAYOQUOT SOUND

The Pachena No. 1 arrived in Clayoquot Sound on March 26 and commenced sounding 
in the Sidney Inlet area. The Hesquiaht Fisheries contractor assisted. No 
spawning activity was observed in the past week however the large body of fish 
that was in Sidney Inlet has dispersed widely giving indications that a spawn 
is imminent.

The assessment vessel Pachena No. 1 will be moving to Barkley Sound this 
evening in order to carry out dive assessments of area spawns.
 
AREA 25 - NOOTKA SOUND & ESPERANZA INLET

No assessment activity took place in Area 25 during the past week. No SOK 
fishery will take place in Esperanza this year. 

TOTAL AREA 25: Up to March 29:12,000 tons

AREA 26 - KYUQUOT SOUND

No assessment activity took place in Area 26 during the past week. 

Total herring population for west coast Vancouver Island up March 29 is 
estimated at 29,000 tons.

A spawn assessment flight is scheduled for March 30 to include the area from 
Barkley Sound to Kyuquot Sound. The Pachena No. 1 will remain in the area until
