FN0047-Notice of Approval of the 2024/2025 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan
The 2024/2025 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) has been approved by the Regional Director, Fisheries Management, Pacific Region. The Draft IFMP was posted on October 28, 2024 for a 30 day review (FN 1140). Thank you to those that submitted advice and recommendations for the plan during the comment period; DFO received comments from First Nations and First Nations organizations, commercial and recreational harvesters and industry organizations, and members of the public. The 2024/2025 IFMP includes First Nations food, social and ceremonial fisheries in all areas. Additionally, commercial fisheries in the Strait of Georgia for food and bait, roe and special use will be permitted at a 14% harvest rate, commercial spawn on kelp and roe gillnet fisheries will be permitted in Prince Rupert District at a 5% harvest rate, and a limited commercial spawn on kelp fishery will be available in the Central Coast. The commercial spawn on kelp fishery will be open on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Minor stock areas 12 and 27 will be open for spawn on kelp commercial harvest. Haida Gwaii will be closed to commercial fisheries to support stock rebuilding. Area 10 will also remain closed to commercial fishing this season. For 2024/2025 fisheries in the Strait of Georgia, seine licence holders will be provided with the option to transfer fish quota associated to their Herring Seine licence eligibility between the Food and Bait fisheries. Details of this process will be provided in a separate fishery notice. All harvest will be counted against the total allowable harvest in the SOG.
