Central Coast Herring Bulletin #1 March 16, 2020: The charter vessel Windward Isle is scheduled to operate 22 days this herring season. Windward Isle reached Kitasu Bay via Meyers Passage on March 14th, focussed on sounding and obtaining herring samples for scientific analysis and roe test samples. A successful test sample was taken the morning of March 15th, the vessel is now travelling to Higgins Passage and working toward Spiller Inlet to continue activities. Three gill net charter vessels will operate this season. Start dates are staggered to provide extended coverage. Lady Raven - March 12, 2020 Three Girls II - To be determined Royal Jazz - To be determined CCGS Tully will operate as Central Coast Management Platform from March 15 to March 20, 2020 with DFO manager Bradley Koroluk aboard. The primary focus will be sounding for herring, conducting shoreline herring and spawn surveys and as communications platform. CCGS Tully workboat conducted shoreline assessment of Clifford Bay area March 15. No fish were found, no signs of predators were seen in the area. CCGS Neocaligus will operate as Central Coast Management Platform from March 25 to April 1, 2020 with Steven Groves and Bradley Koroluk aboard. Spawn flights are scheduled for March 20, 23, 26, 30 and April 2, 3 from Bella Bella with additional April flights as required. DFO and Heiltsuk representatives will attend the flights. Dates are subject to change due to weather and herring activity. Soundings: Area 6 Meyers Passage ------ March 15, 75 tons Kitasu Bay --------- March 15, 6200 tons in a few schools, sea lions, 2 humpback whales March 15; Kitasu Bay(Marvin Islands);8.1%;19.4cm;58:51;35-14-2-0-0; (23g:91g) (adjusted roe yield= 8.6%) Note: Many #2s were close to #1s. Area 6 Total: 6275 tons Area 7 Tankeeah to Tate Lagoon ------- March 15, 225 tons (5 schools) Area 7 Total: 225 tons Area 8 Kwakhume Inlet----------------- March 13, 1200 tons Nalu Passage ------------------ March 13, 200 tons Mustang Bay ------------------- March 13, 500 tons Area 8 Total: 1900 tons Any intense fish sounding mammal, bird, whale, or herring spawn observations are requested to be reported.
