Fishery Notice

DFO staff at the Big Qualicum Hatchery are observing healthy salmon returns to 
the Qualicum River. As a result terminal fisheries for chinook and coho salmon 
are being permitted in the following portions of the Qualicum River. Anglers 
should be aware that FSC and ESSR fishing opportunities for the Qualicum First 
Nation may be occurring in the same location. 

Effective immediately until December 31, 2018 the daily limits are as follows:

Open Areas of the Qualicum River: 

Qualicum River upstream of the Big Qualicum Hatchery, those waters between the 
pool above the upper weir (located approx. 75m downstream of the E&N bridge to 
the Horne Lake Dam)

That portion of the Qualicum River located between a fishing boundary sign on 
the Qualicum Reserve fence upstream to the main hatchery bridge crossing.

Daily Limits:

Chinook salmon - 4 per day, only 2 of which may be greater than 62 cm.
Coho salmon - 4 per day, only 2 of which may be greater than 30 cm.

Anglers should also note that Chum salmon retention goes into effect from 
October 16 - November 30 for 1/day.

The daily limit for all species of Pacific salmon from tidal and fresh waters 
combined is 4.

Notes:

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal 
waters of British Columbia.  

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye.  These fish are 
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the 
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the 
adipose fin.

Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head Recovery 
program by labelling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped chinook and 
coho salmon.  Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical information for 
coast-wide stock assessment.  Contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery Program

Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
