FN0807-Invertebrates - Consumption Advisory for Esquimalt Harbour - Area 19
This consumption advisory covers the First Nation and recreational harvest of the seafood listed below from Esquimalt Harbour. Esquimalt Harbour is all waters north of a line connecting Fisgard Light House, Scroggs Rocks, and Duntze Head (Subarea 19-2 and a portion of Subarea 19-3). In 2008, due to continuing concerns regarding the potential impact of the marine sediments on human health, the Department of National Defence (DND) commissioned a Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) to assess the potential risk to people who use the harbour for harvesting seafood. Health Canada's Food Directorate was requested to evaluate whether the consumption of seafoods harvested from Esquimalt Harbour could pose a risk to human health. Health Canada has recommended the following maximum weekly intakes for various seafoods (grams of a specific seafood that could be consumed before exceeding a toxicological reference dose). The recommended maximum amounts that could be consumed per week of a specific seafood were estimated by assuming that none of the other seafoods would be consumed in the same week. Consumption of less than the recommended maximum of any one seafood would allow for the consumption of other seafoods listed. Seafood-----------Toddlers (1 to 4 years old)-------- Adults -------------Recommended maximum consumption---- Recommended maximum consumption -----------------grams per week--------------------- grams per week -----------------(meals per week)------------------- (meals per week) Dungeness crab hepatopancreas----24 g (1 meal)-------------------- 109 g (5 meals) Dungeness crab muscle ----------200 g (3 meals)-------------------- 905 g (8 meals) Red rock crab hepatopancreas---22 g (1 meal)--------------------- 102 g (4 meals) Red rock crab muscle ----------416 g (6 meals)------------------- 1879 g (18 meals) Sea urchin roe---288 g (6 meals)------------------- 1302 g (28 meals) Rockfish muscle -182 g (1.5 meals)----------------- 825 g (5 meals) It could also be noted that according to a fish and shellfish consumption survey conducted in 2006-2007, the estimated average current and future weekly consumption by moderate consumers of crab muscle and finfish harvested from Esquimalt Harbour may be less than the recommended maximum. Health Canada has advised Fisheries and Oceans Canada that crabs entering the marketplace from Esquimalt Harbour are unlikely to pose a health risk to consumers of commercial crabs. Based on this advice, Fisheries and Oceans Canada believes that it is not necessary to close Esquimalt Harbour to commercial crab fishing. Harvesters are reminded that Esquimalt Harbour is already closed for the harvest of bivalve shellfish (e.g., clams, oysters, cockles, mussels, etc.) because of sanitary contamination. All harvesters are reminded to CHECK BEFORE YOU HARVEST to ensure that no PSP/Red Tide or Sanitary Contamination closures exist. For information on current closures call 1-866-431-3474; check the Shellfish Contamination Closures on the Department website (www.pac.dfo- mpo.gc.ca/PSP); or check with the nearest DFO office. (Note - A diagram of the location of the crab hepatopancreas is in the 2009- 2011 British Columbia Tidal Water Sport Fishing Guide (p. 29) or online at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/SFG-GPS-eng.htm.)
