FN1228-ABORIGINAL - Invertebrates - Cockles - Area 3 - FSC Harvest - Opening Immediately
Under agreement with the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is opening portions of Area 3 for food, social and ceremonial harvesting of cockles (Clinocardium nuttallii) for the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation only. Recent, acceptable biotoxin monitoring results permit this opening. A description of the open areas will be posted at the Lax Kw'alaams Band Office and Recreational Centre, can be obtained from the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program, and is detailed in the 2016-17 Lax Kw'alaams Intertidal Bivalve Community Harvest Plan. The harvest areas are very specific and all harvesters must consult with Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program staff before harvesting. Harvesters must be in possession of a valid Lax Kw'alaams Band status card and are requested to report their harvest quantities to the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program. This opening is effective immediately and will continue pending on- going acceptable biotoxin monitoring results. Harvesters are reminded to always check for any sanitary or biotoxin closures prior to commencing harvesting. Information on the specific closure boundaries and any other closure information, including marine biotoxin closures, are available on the Internet at: www.pac.dfo-mpo.ca/fm-gp/contamination/index-eng.htm Or call toll-free: 1-866-431-3474. For additional information harvesters should contact the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program or Coral Keehn at (250) 627-3021.
