FN1228-ABORIGINAL - Invertebrates - Cockles - Area 3 - FSC Harvest - Opening Immediately


Under agreement with the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council, Fisheries and Oceans 
Canada is opening portions of Area 3 for food, social and ceremonial harvesting 
of cockles (Clinocardium nuttallii)  for the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation only.  
Recent, acceptable biotoxin monitoring results permit this opening.

A description of the open areas will be posted at the Lax Kw'alaams Band Office 
and Recreational Centre, can be obtained from the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries 
Program, and is detailed in the 2016-17 Lax Kw'alaams Intertidal Bivalve 
Community Harvest Plan. The harvest areas are very specific and all harvesters 
must consult with Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program staff before harvesting. 

Harvesters must be in possession of a valid Lax Kw'alaams Band status card and 
are requested to report their harvest quantities to the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries 
Program.  This opening is effective immediately and will continue pending on-
going acceptable biotoxin monitoring results.

Harvesters are reminded to always check for any sanitary or biotoxin closures 
prior to commencing harvesting.
