Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19)

Area 14 

Escapement estimates to date are as follows:  

Puntledge River - 3,030 chum - Target Escapement 60,000.  
Big Qualicum River - 530 chum - Target Escapement 85,000.
Little Qualicum River - 600 chum - Target Escapement 85,000. 


A limited effort demonstration fishery for gill nets will open for 50 hours 
from 08:00 hours Friday, October 20 to 10:00 hours Sunday, October 22, 2017.  
Refer to Fishery Notice FN1087 for full details of participating vessels, 
opened areas and conditions.

Areas 15 and 16 

Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2017 due to low forecast 
levels of abundance.

Areas 17, 18, and 19

Escapement estimates to date are as follows: 

Nanaimo River - 9,762 - Target Escapement 40,000. 
Chemainus River - unk - Target Escapement 50,000.
Cowichan River - 51 - Target Escapement 160,000.
Goldstream River - 0 - Target Escapement 15,000.

It is still early in the chum run timing in the South East Vancouver Island 
Area. There are Didson counters operating on the Nanaimo River and Cowichan 
River and another will be installed on the Chemainus River this week. Stream 
surveys on the Goldstream River started this Wednesday Oct 18. 

There will not be a commercial fishery in Area 17, 18 & 19 this week. 
Information from the Nanaimo River will be reviewed on Monday October 23 and a 
conference call with Area E, B and H Advisors is scheduled for 13:00hrs Monday 
October 23 to discuss the possibility of a commercial fishery in Area 17 
targeting Nanaimo Chum. 

The next Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update will be Thursday October 26.
