FN1067-COMMERCIAL - Salmon: Gill Net and Seine - Chum - Area 21 & 121 - Information Update
Due to current escapement levels and low catch rates in the gill net fisheries to date, there are no commercial fisheries planned for the week of October 15 - 21, 2017. The total escapement into Nitinat Lake and River to October 12 is approximately 80,000. The target escapement for this week to October 14 is 125,000. It is unlikely that this escapement target will be met. The catch per unit effort from the gill net fisheries indicate a total return lower than 400,000, which is lower than the pre-season forecast of 510,000. Conditions will continue to be monitored daily throughout the week and changes to the fishery plans could be announced on short notice. The Area E gill net catch to date is approximately 36,000 chum in three days of fishing. The fishery on October 1 with a fleet of 104 boats caught 9,000 chum. The fishery on October 8 and 9 with a fleet of 74 boats caught 27,000 chum. The hatchery has 5 million eggs in holding to date; with a target of 30 million. Fishing continues in the lake and river for brood stock capture. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Mike Spence, Resource Manager, Port Alberni (250) 720 4440
