FN1002-Notice of 2017/2018 Draft Pacific Herring Food and Bait and Special Use Commercial Fishing Plans Available for Public Comment

Fisheries and Ocean Canada is soliciting comments regarding two draft
appendices to the 2017/2018 Pacific Herring Integrated Fisheries Management
Plan (IFMP); the Food and Bait and Special Use herring appendices/fishing
plans.

The documents are available for review and comment by contacting Roger Kanno at
(604) 666-7851 or roger.kanno@dfo-mpo.gc.ca, or Corey Jackson at (604) 666-3637

The Food and Bait and Special Use herring fisheries are scheduled to open on
November 7, 2017.

The initial catch target for the Food and Bait herring fishery is 4,000 short
tons in the Strait of Georgia (SOG). Harvest levels for Prince Rupert District
(PRD) will be determined following a review of the annual stock assessment and
forecast for Pacific Herring. Access will be provided through the option to
select harvest in either the SOG or PRD Food and Bait fisheries instead of the
roe seine fishery, at the time of roe herring area selection. Further details
regarding the Food and Bait herring licencing process will be provided in a
separate fishery notice.

The development of the remainder of the 2017/2018 Pacific herring IFMP and
associated appendices will be undertaken over the upcoming weeks with a target
date for release of the consolidated draft IFMP in December. Amendments to the
Food and Bait or Special Use Commercial Plans, including final catch targets,
will be reflected in the consolidated draft IFMP.

Please provide any comments on the draft plans to Roger Kanno by October 27,
2017:
