The industry test vessel Pachena No.1 commenced assessment in the Strait of
Georgia on Feb 23. The DFO charter test vessel Denman Isle commenced assessment
Feb 24. There are other vessels sounding and assessing stocks in Area 14.
Significant bodies of fish have been located in Lambert Channel and in Lower
Baynes Sound. Assessment and tonnage estimates are incomplete, and the vessels
will continue to assess the areas today and tonight.

There was a spawn overflight conducted on February 23 from Nanaimo to Seal Bay
at 13:30 hours, two very small spot spawns seen on Denman Is near Fillongley
Park, lots of bird and sea lion activity along the shore from the ferry
crossing north to Komas bluff. Sea lions in the horseshoe and bird activity
offshore from Little River. A build up of sea lions at St. Johns Pt on Hornby
Island, and at Mapleguard Point. The spawn flight from this morning flew the
same route except for Lower Baynes Sound due to fog. No spawn was seen and a
similar distribution of marine mammals and birds was observed, although more
sea lions observed at Flora Is. Next flight will be Feb 25 or 26, depending on
test vessel distribution and spawn reports.
