Mid Vancouver Island Chum Update (Areas 14 to 19) Thursday October 29, 2015 Area 14 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Puntledge River - 26,200 chum (Oct 27) - Target Escapement 60,000 Big Qualicum River - 13,500 chum (Oct 27) - Target Escapement 85,000 Little Qualicum River - 54,200 chum (Oct 28) - Target Escapement 85,000 Escapement estimates to Area 14 systems have been increasing and are tracking near the pre-season forecast which predicts a moderate surplus. Fisheries targeting Area 14 chum will open for 2 days beginning Monday, November 2, 2015 for Area D Gillnet and Area H troll. Details for these fisheries are provided in separate fishery notices. Areas 15 and 16 No assessment information. Commercial fishing opportunities are not expected in 2015 due to low forecast levels of abundance. Areas 17, 18, and 19 Escapement estimates to date are as follows: Nanaimo River - 33,000 chum (Oct 28) - Target Escapement 40,000 Chemainus River - Unknown - Target Escapement 50,000 Cowichan River - 55,000 (Oct 28) - Target Escapement 160,000 Goldstream River - 6,000 (Oct 28) - Target Escapement 15,000 There is a 2 day gillnet fishery in the Nanaimo Area. Escapement has tapered off and further fisheries in the area will be discussed early next week. There are no further fisheries planned for this week in Areas 17, 18 or 19. If there is a significant change in escapement to any of the major systems in the Lower Strait of Georgia Advisors will be contacted.
